Italy is swarming with mosquitoes. It is slightly less romantic to spend the evening in a quiet square with musicians playing gently in the background, when you’re being slowly eaten alive.
Tired of being bitten, we decided to follow a friends advice and make our own insecticide. We used basil (which mosquitoes detest) and, after dousing ourselves in this, were ready to face the evening. We set off to eat outside in the warm dusk. It was stunningly beautiful under the blood red sky.
In the morning, we evaluated the damage. Only one new bite. Our conclusion? Basil is brilliantly repulsive to mosquitoes. Yasssss.
